From Jenny Lind to Maria Callas, Amina – the sleepwalker of the title – has been embodied by some of opera’s greatest divas and her crowning aria is a showstopper. As ever in opera, themes of madness, misunderstanding and betrayal loom large; will Amina have her happy ending, or end in despair?
The Heavenly Ledger was written by Evan Henry & John Klaess, and is Random Opera Company’s first new opera commission, which is the result of our 2021 composition competition. The esteemed jury comprising Martyn Brabbins, Sir David Pountney and Claire Rutter praised the piece for telling a pertinent story with humour and a tinge of sadness and enjoyed the unique approach to harmony.
Donizetti’s comic opera Don Pasquale is brought up to date in this new production. Filmed at Glyndebourne during lockdown in 2021, with a cameo from opera star Donald Maxwell, this production is stripped to the essentials, but still retains all the drama of the opera buffa masterpiece. As part of our efforts to promote music making during lockdown, we filmed seven separate projects between November 2020 – February 2021. The performers never met in person, and all recordings were completed in isolation at home – an enormous achievement for all involved.
Concerned about the local spread of the pandemic, the Abbess has instructed all of the sisters in the convent to remain confined to their rooms. Meanwhile, a visit from the Princess to her niece – sets in motion a series of dire actions that ultimately result in tragedy, forgiveness, and peace. (Italian, English subtitles)
