Don Pasquale, the aging, cantankerous bachelor, is determined to punish Ernesto for his impudent ways – after all, how dare the young nephew refuse a marriage opportunity, in favour of his love for Norina?! The old man enlists the help of family friend Dr Malatesta to find him a suitable bride, so that he can produce an heir & cut Ernesto out of his inheritance. Malatesta has other plans, and devises a scheme to ensure that Pasquale gives up on the idea of marriage, and leaves the young lovers to be happy.
